On March 14, “Darkness into Light” brings two major works and a stunning new piece by Joshua Groffman to Ars Musica audiences. While the Soviet Army was besieging Nazi-occupied Budapest, Zoltán Kodály was forced to hide in the darkness of a cellar for safety, where his luminous Missa Brevis took shape. Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms both soothes and excites the spirit with its tranquil setting of the twenty-third psalm in clear, youthful tones set against complex choral rhythms as only Bernstein could so masterfully write.
