During the week of May 8th, Ridgewood Water is performing a Fire Hydrant Test at 20 locations throughout the Village of Ridgewood, in cooperation with the Village Fire Department. This test includes a pressure and flow test that could cause a disruption in the normal operations of our distribution system. While unlikely, this test could cause mineral sediment to dislodge and enter our water supply, causing discolored water to flow through faucets and appliances. While discolored water is a nuisance, it does not pose any known adverse health effects.

What Should I Do?

Check your water before use.  If discolored water is found, homeowners should flush (turn on) their cold water faucets until the discolored water diminishes, which typically occurs within 2-3 minutes.   It is also advisable to bypass any filtration systems or water softeners while flushing as the sediment may overload the filter media. Run the closest tap to check your water for the presence of discoloration or sediment prior to running your washing machine or dishwasher.  If you discover discolored water while washing your clothes, don't dry them as this can lock in stains.  Please contact our customer service department for advice on how to treat stained clothes or on effective flushing techniques.
